Ligature Training

This course is designed for those working in support of people who may self-harm using a ligature.  In some health and social care services, this is an essential course for ensuring the health, safety and well-being of the people being supported.

 

The course content covers:

 

  • Understanding asphyxiation and strangulation
  • Identifying ligatures
  • Signs and symptoms of ligature injuries
  • Ligature (anchor) points
  • Assessment of risk
  • Ligature situation - suspended and non-suspended
  • Safe removal of a ligature
  • First aid (practical assessment for first aid and ligature release situations)
  • Preservation of evidence

 

The training is delivered using a blended approach including PowerPoint slideshows, videos, whole group discussion, group work exercises, practical skills demonstration, practice and roleplay.

 

Assessment is continuous with regard to knowledge and attitudes but also through formal observation of skills practice.

 

It is a 4 hour course and can be scheduled as a single half-day course but it is possible to rum two courses in one day (AM and PM).
