Course Overview
Delivered by a registered mental health nurse, this course will develop understanding about self-harm and how to support someone who self-harms. You will explore the reasons for self-harm and dispel some of the myths and stereotypes that exist about self-harming behaviour. After considering the ways in which people self-harm, you will explore a range of practical support strategies and consider how best these can be utilised in your setting. You will reflect on the importance of self-care and staff wellbeing, and understand the professional support available for everyone impacted by self-harm.

Can this course be delivered virtually?
Yes. While we strongly believe that face-to-face training is most effective, this course is modular so can be delivered virtually in sections. Whether delivered in person or virtually, there is an expectation that participants will actively engage in activities, group work exercises and discussions. Please speak to us as we will strive to deliver the training in the way that best suits your organisation.
Is the training certified?
This course is CPD certified and is also mapped against the NICE self-harm: assessment, management and preventing recurrence guidelines.
Will additional training be required?
The aim of the course is to equip staff with the knowledge and understanding to support someone who self-harms. Depending on individual needs, you may wish to consider our training in Ligature Release and Emergency First Aid at Work. Our Positive Behaviour Support courses and certified Physical Interventions training may also be highly useful to develop staff confidence in supporting people with any behaviours of concern.
