Course Overview

This course is designed to meet with the Health and Safety at Work Act and Manual Handling Operations Regulations regarding manual handling of people within health & social care settings. You will develop the knowledge, understanding and practical skills around manual handling, with an aim to minimise risk of injury to yourself and patients. You will be able to identify hazards and reduce risk while promoting patient independence. You will learn about moving and handling equipment, demonstrate safe moving and handling techniques, and understanding of how to assist a falling or fallen person.

Course Objectives

  • Understand the relevant legislation that underpins manual handling of people
  • Understand the importance of the musco-skeletal system and the spine
  • Identify manual handling hazards and demonstrate knowledge on risk reduction including promoting patient independence
  • Perform safe moving and handling techniques, using relevant equipment and in simulated scenarios
  • Demonstrate knowledge on how to assist a falling or fallen person, including injury assessment and how to assist from the floor

Course Schedule

SESSION 1

  • Introduction to the training and defining manual handling
  • Legislation related to manual handling
  • Patient specific legislation

SESSION 2

  • Musco-skeletal system, the spine and common injuries
  • Dynamic risk assessment and hazard perception using ELITE.
  • Risk reduction, promoting independence and record-keeping

SESSION 3 – Practical Techniques

Chair

  • Sitting to standing, standing to sitting and repositioning
  • Assisting walking with and without a frame
  • Using a rotunda, stand aid and slide sheet

Bed

  • Standing to lying, lying to standing and repositioning
  • Techniques for assisting with personal care, dressing and continence product change.
  • Sizing and fitting a sling

Using a hoist

  • Bed to bed, bed to chair and chair to bed
  • On & off a toilet or commode.

Falls

  • Assisting when falling
  • Assisting when fallen, including basic first aid assessment
  • Troubleshooting

SESSION 4 – Practical Demonstration

  • Learner to demonstrate dynamic risk assessment in controlled simulation of manual handling task
  • Learner to demonstrate safe moving and handling technique/skill with and without use of equipment
  • Questions, answers and feedback
