Autism Awareness: An Introduction

This 1-day course is aimed at providing support staff with an insight into the care and support people with autism and other conditions on the spectrum such as Asperger's Syndrome.

 

 

Participants will gain an understanding of the history and diagnosis of Autism and how it affects the individual and their interactions with the environment and other people.

 

It covers difficulties in social functioning (communication, relationships and imagination), issues relating to sensory sensitivities and sensory integration and challenges assumptions about what autism is/is not.  It also covers the basic principles of support for people with autism and examines the SPELL framework as a useful model for designing and assuring appropriate support.
