Level 2 – Breakaway/self-protection skills & restrictive physical interventions

A 3-day course including:

  • Understanding challenging behaviours (including violence and aggression)
  • Developing strategies aimed at prevention, de-escalation and managment of challenging behaviours (primary, secondary and tertiary strategies)
  • Relevant legislation and national guidelines
  • Breakaway and self-protection skills
  • Restrictive Physical Interventions (RPI) skills
  • Safe practice guidelines
  • Restraint reduction guidelines

The course and its theoretical content are based on the latest research evidence and includes universally recognised models that assist in our undertanding of human behaviour.

There is a strong emphasis of prevention and de-escalation which again is based on research and evidence-based strategies.

The physical skills include:

  • breakaways from grabs to the arms/wrists, clothing and hair
  • airway protection
  • a biting release
  • a basic guard and evasion technique
  • a standing/walking restraint (RPI)
  • a seated restraint (RPI)

The physical skills are simple to learn and highly effective when used in practice.

NB In some circumstances, it is possible to extend the range of RPI skills to meet the needs of the commissioning service(s) and the people it supports.  Please contact us to discuss this further - we are confident we can find solutions to meet your training needs.
